Most important for building muscle: repetitions or maximum weight?
Both the volume of repetitions and the weight play an important role in building muscle, and the best results are usually achieved by combining both factors in an appropriate way.
Volume of repetitions: This refers to the number of repetitions of a given exercise performed during a workout. Working at high volume, especially by performing many repetitions per set and/or many sets overall, can increase muscle growth by triggering muscle hypertrophy, i.e. increase in muscle size. Higher volume training can also improve muscle endurance and stamina.
Weight: The weight or resistance used during strength training also has a significant effect on muscle development. Using heavy weights activates more muscle fibers and can lead to greater microscopic damage to the muscles, which in turn stimulates growth. Heavier weights are most often used when training for strength and maximal strength.
The best strategy for muscle growth is to integrate both of these factors into your training program. This can mean using a variety of repetitions and weights in different training sessions to achieve different effects and stimulate the muscles in different ways. It is also important to balance training with adequate rest and proper nutrition to maximize muscle development and recovery. Finally, optimal volume and weight vary depending on individual goals, body type and training level. Designing an exercise schedule with a licensed personal trainer can help you tailor your exercise program to achieve the best results.
